Help Soroptimist “Free the Girls” ~ 2012 Northwestern Region Service Project

FreeTheGirls.bmpSIB collecting bras, new and gently used, as well as, camisoles, nursing bras and sports bras to be used to help free a slave.  When you donate a bra you help give a former slave a job.  Free the Girls www.freethegirls.com is a non-profit organization that provides job opportunities to women rescued from sex trafficking.  All donations go directly to fund job creation projects.  Free the Girls works alongside safe houses throughout the world that rescue women from sex trafficking and provide rehabilitation services.  Your donation helps provide survivors of human trafficking make a living selling used clothing while they recover and build a new life.  Selling used clothing is a profitable business where a woman can actually support herself/family.

You ask ... why Bras...? The answer is easy, Great Income!  Second-hand clothing is a profitable market in many countries around the world. Bras are usually sought after items.  Bras provide an opportunity for these women to work with other women, since they have a history of being abused and used by men, this is a safe environment.  Most of the women we work with were sold into prostitution as children, only 8-10 years old. Because their lives were stolen from them, they missed out on going to school and getting an education. Selling bras allows them to work as much or as little as their school schedule permits.  Once a program has been started with a safe house, it is designed to sustain itself. The women receive their starting inventory of bras at no cost, then the women pay a small amount of money for additional bras once they sell their initial inventory.

Donation deadline is April 12, 2012.
Email SIB.  Please bring your donations to 408 13th Street West.

Sexual Trafficking Soroptimist is raising awareness about the devastating and complex crime of sex trafficking, which largely affects women and girl children.
Sex Trafficking - explore this complex problem and learn what you can do to end the trafficking of women and girls.  Stop Sex Trafficking.  What You Can Do!

January 11 is the National Day of Human Trafficking Awareness

The historic Wilberforce Act increases penalties against traffickers; expands protections for trafficking victims; requires the Justice Department to produce a model law for states to use in investigating and prosecuting trafficking; provides federal law enforcement greater authority to prosecute trafficking cases; and clarifies that the law cannot be interpreted to say that prostitution is a valid form of employment.

Womens Opportunity Award — This program is Soroptimists major service project and aids women seeking to improve their economic status by gaining additional skills, training and education. The program helps women who, as the primary wage-earners for their families, must enter or return to the work force. The women may use the awards to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education; including books, child care and car fare. Many Womens Opportunity Awards winners are domestic abuse survivors who use the funds to help rebuild their lives through improved employment opportunities. Each year, more than $800,000 is awarded through the Womens Opportunity Awards program.
